Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

suicide prevention

Suicide is a preventable tragedy. Unfortunately, many Americans don’t know what warning signs to watch out for in their loved ones. September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. With the right knowledge and help, it’s possible to save the lives of many people who are contemplating suicide.

In today’s post, we seek to spread awareness about suicide, the role of drugs and alcohol, the history of this observance, and the importance of easily accessible resources for those in need.

History of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

In 2008, September was first recognized as National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Suicide is often a touchy subject, so this month is a way to start communication. The month began to raise awareness of the issue. Recognizing warning signs is one of the main steps to ending suicide.

The observance of this month gives non-profits and mental health centers a chance to get information about suicide out to the public. During this time, we seek to highlight resources and places where people can go and get help. For example, we hope to spread the word that 988 is the National Suicide and Crisis Line to call for help. We also hope to increase awareness about the prevalence of suicide in Pine Grove’s home state of Mississippi.

Suicide and Depression in Mississippi

Depression is one of the major precursors to suicide. Around 4 % of our state’s population suffers from a mental illness, including depression. That number only includes people who have reached out for help. Often, those who suffer from depression suffer in silence.

Unfortunately, after suffering for great lengths of time, people of all ages may contemplate committing suicide. This occurrence is common in Mississippi, too. In fact, suicide is the third leading cause of death for young people aged 15–34 in the state.

Role of Drugs and Alcohol in Suicide

Substance use and suicide have a strong link. In fact, according to recent studies, between 19% and 63% of all suicides include the use of drugs and alcohol. This is essential in the fight against suicide. However, substance use disorder needs to be addressed first. As substance use disorder is the leading risk factor for suicide, then the goal of suicide prevention efforts needs to be geared toward those battling addiction.

Mental Health Services and Addiction Programs Aid in Suicide Prevention

Mental health services, behavioral health services, and addiction services are vital to suicide prevention efforts. Individuals who are suffering from substance use disorders need treatment. Once living a life in recovery, the chance of someone taking their own life is greatly decreased.

Most addiction treatment services will look at the underlying causes of addiction, including depression and other co-occurring mental health issues. So, not only can the person get help with their addiction, but they can also get proper treatment for other mental health issues. People treated for mental health issues, including depression, are much less likely to commit suicide.
